  • what's most important?

I am thinking, if one day, i acheive all my aims and destinations, will i be happy? Or i might probably be regretting for missing all those happiness and sadness that my love ones have been facing. I just don't feel like doing anything that i'm doing right now. I am not happy, i know that. But what could be done? Give up med school? No no no. My mom, my aunts and my uncles are gonna be really upset about it. errr........................ whatever.

Are you going to med school because you want to, or because your family pressured you to?

If it's the latter, maybe you should ask yourself if you will be truly happy working as a doctor for the next, what, 30-40 years of your life? If you're not happy, it's hard to make your loved ones happy, isn't it? I mean, would they really be happy to find out that you are pursuing a lifetime goal that you don't really want?

Nah!!!  They didn't force me to do anything. I chose it   and I knew that I must do it. but not anymore!

So you mean you're thinking of changing majors? If no-one pressured you, then why would your family be upset about you changing majors? Wouldn't they be happy that you're doing what you really want to do?

Well, it's hard to explain. I don't really have any preferable major or interest, so they all think med would be the best for me. It's a stable job with some kind of "not-low"- salary. And they did all they could to support me, to have me doing med school with no worries. They are hoping for some changes in their lives, changes that I might bring to them. (maybe that's how I read their minds but it might not be true, or it's merely an excuse for my discouragement.)

True... the good thing about becoming a doctor is that you will never, NEVER have to worry about employment after you graduate. You will ALWAYS be welcome, no matter where you are in the world. In my opinion, it is probably the most stable profession in the world.

However, for me, even if I did possess the diligence to attend medical school, I'm not sure if would be willing to exchange stability to replace something I really enjoy doing.

Stability or passion... which is the wisest choice? Haha... now that's a big question, isn't it?

  • happyphyulewin

yeah, of course, passion is important. Nothing great was ever acheived without enthusiasm. The point is , I've got no passion for anything in the world! What do you do for that? If you were me, passion & stability, what would have come first when you don't even know what you would like to do?

Good point. :)  I think that for a lot of us who grew up in Burma, our passions tend to be very limited because of our environment that we grew up in. When I look at Burmese people, most of them choose to follow the path of computing, accounting, law, or medicine... and that's it! And often, young people in our country don't even care  about computers, accounting, law or medicine; they simply choose from those paths because that's about all they've heard of!

When I came to America, I saw students majoring in all sorts of fields. I found people who were studying psychology, sociology, history, music, kinesiology, art, computer science, computer/electrical/mechanical/civil/chemical engineering, anthropology, and many more. My passions are computers and music, but if I had grew up in another country, I might have had a greater variety of interests as well.

But for our less fortunate peoples, stability and survival have to come before passion. I'm not blaming anyone except the system!

:) so you're studying there or you have PR for US? Your interest sounds great !but, when it comes to computer for me, it sucks, lol.  Music would be great though. Good for you that you're doing what you like. =)

I was surprised when I first came here -- there's HUGE support for the academic and technical study of music. And many different kinds of styles too, such as Jazz, Classical, African traditional, and so on.
